“A trajetória de vida e o tema de sua produção fazem de Hélio Melo, além do principal artista do Acre e da região amazônica, um artista único no panorama brasileiro do século 20”, é o que diz o curador Jacopo Crivelli Visconti em trecho do texto de parede que estará na exposição individual que leva seu nome e será aberta no dia 23 de março na Almeida & Dale Galeria de Arte.
As características que o diferenciam de outros artistas vão da sua obra não ser autobiográfica, mesmo que com uma precisão para trazer suas próprias experiências; o trabalho que transcende a denúncia explícita e cria imagens e alegorias para sintetizar a violenta transformação social e da paisagem; a denúncia e defesa estarem intrínsecas em seus desenhos e pinturas aparentemente despretensiosos; e uma forma de expressão que “consegue ser um retrato da violência, da beleza, da destruição e da imensidão sublime da floresta, de sua existência silenciosa, profunda, insubstituível”, diz Jacopo.
Nascido e criado num seringal, Hélio Melo (1926-2001) foi seringueiro, catraieiro, barbeiro, vigia, escritor, poeta, músico e artista. A partir do final dos anos 1970, depois de ter se mudado para Rio Branco e ter passado a pintar a floresta de memória, participou das primeiras exposições da região, chamando a atenção de importantes artistas e críticos, como Sérgio Camargo e Frederico Morais, que se tornaram grandes admiradores de seu trabalho.
“Na grande maioria de suas obras, a cena é estruturada de maneira bastante convencional, com um primeiro plano rente ao chão,formado por plantas baixas ou grama alta, elementos verticais (basicamente árvores) que fecham a cena dos dois lados e, no espaço delimitado por esses eixos, os personagens. Trata-se de uma construção teatral ou cinematográfica do espaço que sugere, portanto,uma encenação e uma mise en scéne, não uma reprodução plana, direta e ingênua da realidade”, diz Jacopo.
A presidente do ConCultura, Flávia Burlamaqui, está na exposição juntamente com Fátima e Vitor Melo, filha e neto do artista.
“Uma exposição como essa é reconhecimento desse artista que dedicou vida e obra para falar da Amazônia. Belezas, mas dissabores”, disse Flávia.
A exposição traz a floresta retratada por Melo e segue atual mesmo depois de pouco mais de 20 anos de sua morte, ancestral, mítica e fabulosa. “Um organismo que alimenta e é alimentado, que somatiza as violências e a destruição, que chora junto com os animais, que se emociona, sofre e, à sua maneira, fala (…) Direta ou indiretamente, vários desenhos e pinturas de Melo sugerem que é a partir da floresta que as coisas se organizam e se estruturam, e explicitam a equivalência entre os personagens que aparecem emcena”, escreve Jacopo para o livro que está sendo preparado sobre o artista.
De alguns anos para cá, a obra de Hélio Melo tem sido colocada em diálogo com a de outros artistas. Também em contribuição para o livro, Lisette Lagnado analisa as razões por ter incluído Melo na 27ª Bienal de São Paulo, por ela curada em 2006, e aponta sutilmente para a necessidade de se traçar outras genealogias e identificar outros parentescos, na arte contemporânea, para a sua obra e a sua poética. Lagnado sublinha, por exemplo, afinidades com a obra de Hélio Oiticica, cuja intimidade com as franjas marginalizadas da sociedade brasileira justifica plenamente a aproximação com a empática representação da tragédia dos ciclos da borracha feita por Melo.
